Savoy Court

Restoring the Savoy to its former glory.

2 Savoy Court, London WC2.
Phases 1 & 2
Value: £1.3m

Originally part of the Savoy Hotel, 2 Savoy Court is Grade II listed, built by theatre impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte with the profits he made from his popular Gilbert and Sullivan operas. It was opened on 6th August 1889.

Fast forward 130 years and the building required significant bespoke structural and technically challenging faience replacement works. We were employed over two separate phases of work to complete the restoration at a total cost of £1.3m.

The project began with a Thermatech clean of the faience which exposed extensive historic failures and Regent Street Disease in the underlying steel work. We worked with specialists at Darwen Terracotta to manufacture new templates and moulds to replace the detailed faience block work whilst treating or replacing the steel where failure had occurred. Our in-house team of masons and fixers then removed and replaced the failed faience.

We completed the restoration to this iconic building by replacing the lead roof, overhauling all the windows and redecorating. Our fastidious attention to detail on the project ensures this amazing building is well set for its next one hundred years.

“The level of detail and care taken by the Rosewood team and their will to ensure the project runs smoothly is exemplary. Rosewood’s working practices, from Director level right down to the site team, are collaborative and proactive. The expertise provided by Rosewood when completing complex external cleaning, stone and brick restoration gave us the reassurance that the works would always be completed to an excellent standard.”
