The Globe Tavern, Borough Market

Restoring a famous London tavern.

– The Globe Tavern, London, SE1.
– Phase 1
– Value: £300,000

Built in 1872 and designed by renowned Victorian architect Henry Jarvis, The Globe Tavern is set in a distinctive Gothic-style building, situated in the heart of London’s bustling Borough Market. Named after the Globe Theatre, the building was also made famous more recently in the movies by being the pub below Bridget Jones’ flat.

We were hired to conduct a full external overhaul of the building. One of the major technical challenges was the tavern sits between two active railway bridges.  This meant we had to work hand in glove with Network Rail to ensure the restoration work could be completed safely and on time.

The project included the complete replacement of the roof with Penryn Welsh Slate and leadwork, the rebuilding of two chimney stacks in London Stock brickwork, Portland Stone and lime mortar, the rebuild of the Portland Stone gable end and external joinery works and decorations. We also Thermatech cleaned the façade to remove years of historic pollution to fully restore this entertaining landmark.

“The work produced by Rosewood is of the highest quality and the clear attention to detail is considered throughout all works. I would have no hesitation in recommending Rosewood to carry out stone restoration and conservation works and look forward to working with them in the near future”
